The 25 Best High School Movies Ever
Jonah Hill's first film as a writer and director is a soft, delicate look at growing up as a boy in the Nineties and another great addition to the canon of skate movies. It's not the most original film in the world, but it tackles privilege beautifully. From the first shot of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle bedspread to the last sequence, it is a movie of pure nostalgia for a time not long gone. It is also a film very happy to nestle into a time-honoured tradition of skater coming-of-age films: think Lords Of Dogtown , Kids or even the recent Skate Kitchen. The story is simple and well-trodden ground: frustrated, scrawny year-old Stevie Sunny Suljic is being bullied by his surly older brother Ian Lucas Hedges. One day he witnesses a group of young skater boys dossing around, follows them to the board shop they hang out at and makes inroads to become a part of their clique. What follows from there is a look at all the beats of adolescence over a summer in the mid-Nineties: sexual encounters, drinking, drugs and hip-hop. Racial dynamics between the boys are carefully observed — one conversation with a black security guard is particularly hilarious — and at the moment most films would leave us with the boys talking about a sexual encounter at a party, the film cuts right back to the girls in question sat in the living room, being just as salacious, just as blunt and just as giggly. That is not to say that Mid90s is a perfect film, or even a flawlessly executed one. When Stevie is sat in tears, he comes and explains to him that — while his problems feel like the worst in the world at this moment — his issues are pretty good in comparison to the poverty, abuse and apathy of their fellow friends.
